"When someone has
selflessly given themselves to you, they keep on giving after
they are gone."
To be selfless in a relationship, especially that of marriage,
one is devoted to the others' welfare more than their own. In
their love and passion, they give their very soul to the other.
When one loves their mate in a selfless way, their partner
cannot help but give back everything they are receiving and the
two souls meld together into one flesh. Such a love can only
come from God by power of the Holy Spirit.
1 John 4:7-12
7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and
every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.
8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that
God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might
live through him.
10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us,
and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one
another.
12 No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God
dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.
God is selfless [giving everything]
in His love toward us. Verse 11 is saying that if God loved us
in this unselfish and selfless way, we ought to love others the
same way. If we do, then as verse 12 says, God surely dwells
within us and love is perfected. Selfless love is forever
remembered and that love we experience stays with us even when
we are separated from this person for a day, a week, a year or
even in death. Though the one we love is not here, they keep on
giving to us in memories and even with mental manifestations of
what would have been. Death cannot separate two individuals who
shared such a love. The one who has died lives on. The one flesh
remains and the love of the one now gone blossoms still.
Such was my experience with the love of my life, my wife, Joan.
Hers was an unselfish heart and love was perfected in her all
the years of her life. Many considered Joan their best friend
and she was a best friend to everyone. I am constantly
astonished by my memories of her. I marvel at how powerfully the
Spirit of God worked in her heart and mind. Such love never
stops giving and I gain new insights and deeper feelings for her
with each passing day. This is the kind of love that needs to be
perfected in all of us in the faith.
Song I dedicated to my wife after she died that speaks to my
thoughts above:
