Scriptures on the Principle of
Discipline
Matthew 18:15-18
Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and
tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall
hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother. But if he will not
hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the
mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be
established. And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it
unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let
him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican. Verily I
say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be
bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth
shall be loosed in heaven.
Romans 14:1 Him that is
weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful
disputations.
Romans 15:1-3 We then
that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak,
and not to please ourselves. Let every one of us please his
neighbour for his good to edification. For even Christ
pleased not himself; but, as it is written, The reproaches
of them that reproached thee fell on me.
Romans 16:17 Now I
beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and
offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and
avoid them.
1 Corinthians 4:19 But I
will come to you shortly, if the Lord will, and will know,
not the speech of them which are puffed up, but the power.
1 Corinthians 5:2 And ye
are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he that
hath done this deed might be taken away from among you.
1 Corinthians 5:4-7
In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered
together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus
Christ, To deliver such an one unto Satan for the
destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in
the day of the Lord Jesus. Your glorying is not good. Know
ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump? Purge
out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as
ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is
sacrificed for us:
1 Corinthians 5:11-13
But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any
man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous,
or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an
extortioner; with such an one no not to eat.
For what have I to do to judge them also that are without?
do not ye judge them that are within? But them that are
without God judgeth. Therefore put away from among
yourselves that wicked person.
2 Corinthians 2:10 To
whom ye forgive any thing, I forgive also: for if I forgave
any thing, to whom I forgave it, for your sakes forgave I it
in the person of Christ.
2 Corinthians 6:14 Be ye
not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what
fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what
communion hath light with darkness?
2 Corinthians 6:15 And
what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he
that believeth with an infidel?
2 Corinthians 10:1-11
Now I Paul myself beseech you by the meekness and gentleness
of Christ, who in presence am base among you, but being
absent am bold toward you: But I beseech you, that I may not
be bold when I am present with that confidence, wherewith I
think to be bold against some, which think of us as if we
walked according to the flesh. For though we walk in the
flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of
our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the
pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations,
and every high thing that exalteth itself against the
knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought
to the obedience of Christ; And having in a readiness to
revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.
Do ye look on things after the outward appearance? If any
man trust to himself that he is Christ's, let him of himself
think this again, that, as he is Christ's, even so are we
Christ's. For though I should boast somewhat more of our
authority, which the Lord hath given us for edification, and
not for your destruction, I should not be ashamed: That I
may not seem as if I would terrify you by letters. For his
letters, say they, are weighty and powerful; but his bodily
presence is weak, and his speech contemptible. Let such an
one think this, that, such as we are in word by letters when
we are absent, such will we be also in deed when we are
present.
2 Corinthians 13:1 This
is the third time I am coming to you. In the mouth of two or
three witnesses shall every word be established.
Galatians 5:10 I have
confidence in you through the Lord, that ye will be none
otherwise minded: but he that troubleth you shall bear his
judgment, whosoever he be.
Galatians 6:1 Brethren,
if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual,
restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering
thyself, lest thou also be tempted.
1 Thessalonians 5:14 Now
we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort
the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all
men.
2 Thessalonians 3:6 Now
we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus
Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that
walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he
received of us.
2 Thessalonians 3:14 And
if any man obey not our word by this epistle, note that man,
and have no company with him, that he may be ashamed.
1 Timothy 5:1 Rebuke not
an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men
as brethren;
1 Timothy 5:19-20
Against an elder receive not an accusation, but before two
or three witnesses. Them that sin rebuke before all, that
others also may fear.
1 Timothy 6:3-5 If any
man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words,
even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine
which is according to godliness; He is proud, knowing
nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words,
whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings,
Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute
of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such
withdraw thyself.
Titus 1:13 This witness
is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be
sound in the faith;
Titus 2:15 These things
speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man
despise thee.
Titus 3:10-11 A man that
is an heretick after the first and second admonition reject;
Knowing that he that is such is subverted, and sinneth,
being condemned of himself.
2 John 1:10
If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine,
receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:
For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil
deeds.
Revelation 22:19 And if
any man shall take away from the words of the book of this
prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of
life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which
are written in this book.
Note One: The above is
about discipline in the church. The whole Salvation
Process is about and requires discipline. For personal
discipline in the Salvation Process, see "How To
Instructions in Righteousness."
Key scriptures on
self-discipline and self control:
Proverbs 25:28 He that
hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is
broken down, and without walls.
Galatians 5:22-23 But
the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering,
gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against
such there is no law.
2 Timothy 1:7 For God
hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of
love, and of a sound mind.
Titus 2:2 That the aged
men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity,
in patience.
1 Peter 1:13 Wherefore
gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the
end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the
revelation of Jesus Christ;
2 Peter 1:5-6 And beside
this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to
virtue knowledge; And to knowledge temperance; and to
temperance patience; and to patience godliness;
Note Two: We know from
our studies that for a topic to be, in fact, a principle, it
must have universal application. It must apply to the
individual, to friendships, marriage & families, governments
and corporations both public and private. They will
each have their own standards, values and procedures for
discipline and self control.
