SUBJECT: Tithing, Offerings and Giving
QUESTION: What are the benefits to the one who
gives, if any?
ANSWER:
From the Word of God we read of the benefits to the one who
is the giver
PROVERBS ON GENEROSITY
Proverbs 21:26—King
James
He coveteth greedily all the day long: but the righteous
giveth and spareth not.
Proverbs 21:26--Living
The lazy man longs for many things, but his hands refuse to
work. He is greedy to get, while the godly love to give!
BENEFITS OF GENEROSITY
Besides the obvious benefits to the needy, which are the
object of our generosity, there are also reciprocal benefits
to the giver.
1) THEY WILL BECOME RICHER
Proverbs 11:24-25—King
James
24 There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and there
is that withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth to
poverty.
25 The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth
shall be watered also himself.
Proverbs 11:24-25--Living
24 It is possible to give away and become richer! It is also
possible to hold on too tightly and lose everything.
25 Yes, the liberal man shall be rich! By watering others,
he waters himself.
Supporting scriptures:

Thou shalt surely give him, and thine heart shall not be
grieved when thou givest unto him: because that for this
thing the LORD thy God shall bless thee in all thy works,
and in all that thou puttest thine hand unto.

He hath dispersed, he hath given to the poor; his
righteousness endureth for ever; his horn shall be exalted
with honour.

righteousness shall be a sure reward.

that which he hath given will he pay him again.

he shall gather it for him that will pity the poor.

1 Cast thy bread upon the waters: for thou shalt find it
after many days.
2 Give a portion to seven, and also to eight; for thou
knowest not what evil shall be upon the earth.
Luke 6:38
Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed
down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give
into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete
withal it shall be measured to you again.
2 Corinthians 9:5-11
5 Therefore I thought it necessary to exhort the brethren,
that they would go before unto you, and make up beforehand
your bounty, whereof ye had notice before, that the same
might be ready, as a matter of bounty, and not as of
covetousness.
6 But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also
sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also
bountifully.
7 Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let
him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a
cheerful giver.
8 And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that
ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound
to every good work:
9 (As it is written, He hath dispersed abroad; he hath given
to the poor: his righteousness remaineth for ever.
10 Now he that ministereth seed to the sower both minister
bread for your food, and multiply your seed sown, and
increase the fruits of your righteousness;)
11 Being enriched in every thing to all bountifulness, which
causeth through us thanksgiving to God.
2) THEY WILL BE BLESSED
Proverbs 22:9—King
James
He that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed; for he giveth
of his bread to the poor.
Proverbs 22:9 ---American
Standard Version
He who has a generous eye will be blessed; For he shares his
food with the poor.

1 Blessed is he that considereth the poor: the LORD will
deliver him in time of trouble.
2 The LORD will preserve him, and keep him alive; and he
shall be blessed upon the earth: and thou wilt not deliver
him unto the will of his enemies.
3 The LORD will strengthen him upon the bed of languishing:
thou wilt make all his bed in his sickness.
Psalms 112:9
He hath dispersed, he hath given to the poor; his
righteousness endureth for ever; his horn shall be exalted

after many days.
2 Give a portion to seven, and also to eight; for thou
knowest not what evil shall be upon the earth.
Isaiah 58:7-12
7 Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou
bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou
seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not
thyself from thine own flesh?
8 Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine
health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness
shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall be thy
rereward.
9 Then shalt thou call, and the LORD shall answer; thou
shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am. If thou take away
from the midst of thee the yoke, the putting forth of the
finger, and speaking vanity;
10 And if thou draw out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy
the afflicted soul; then shall thy light rise in obscurity,
and thy darkness be as the noonday:
11 And the LORD shall guide thee continually, and satisfy
thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt
be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose
waters fail not.
12 And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste
places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many
generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the
breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in.
Matthew 25:34-40
34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand,
Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared
for you from the foundation of the world:
35 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty,
and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:
36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me:
I was in prison, and ye came unto me.
37 Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when
saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave
thee drink?
38 When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked,
and clothed thee?
39 Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto
thee?
40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say
unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least
of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
Luke 6:35-38
35 But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping
for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye
shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto
the unthankful and to the evil.
36 Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is
merciful.
37 Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and
ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be
forgiven:
38 Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure,
pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall
men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye
mete withal it shall be measured to you again.
Acts 20:35
I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought
to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord
Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to
receive.
2 Corinthians 8:1-2

their joy and their deep poverty abounded unto the riches of
their liberality.
2 Corinthians 9:6-11
6 But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also
sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also
bountifully.

him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a

life.

his eyes will have many curses.

Hebrews 13:16

WRONG GIVING
But the kind of giving spoken of here is different than that
practiced by many who try to win the favor of the rich or
powerful by giving them gifts, for the giving being spoken
of here is directed to the poor and needy. In fact wasting
one's generosity on the rich is likened to oppressing the
poor.
Proverbs 22:16---King
James Version
He that oppresseth the poor to increase his riches, and he
that giveth to the rich, shall surely come to want.
Proverbs 22:16---Living
He who gains by oppressing the poor or by bribing the rich
shall end in poverty.
But let us not boast about our generosity. Let us do it
simply and quietly
Proverbs 25:14---King
James
Whoso boasteth himself of a false gift is like clouds and
wind without rain.
Proverbs 25:14---Living
One who doesn't give the gift he promised is like a cloud
blowing over a desert without dropping any rain.
FROM OUR DOCTRINAL STATEMENT
ON TITHING AND GIVING
Our doctrinal statement on Tithing and Giving is posted on
the Internet, at our Church web site:
http://www.intercontinentalcog.org/churchdoctrines.php?stp=23
It states two (2) important goals that tithing (and
giving) accomplishes in the Christian’s Life.
1)
It helps develop Godly character by developing
a giving spirit.
2)
It helps spread the gospel and blessings to
others.
“Tithing accomplishes two other important goals in the
Christian's life. Through it we build godly character by
developing a giving spirit. Simultaneously, we are using
our resources to share with others both the message and the
blessings of the Christian life. Tithing serves as a means
of expressing one's love towards both God and his fellow
man. The biblical injunction of cheerfully giving ten
percent of one's own income is a physical procedure designed
to teach profound spiritual principles and lessons. It is,
indeed, in mankind's best interests.”
