SUBJECT: Health—Doctors—Inoculations (shots)
QUESTIONS: What does the Church have to say about
members getting inoculations and seeing doctors? What does
the Bible say about our taking care of our health?
ANSWER:
There is no "thus sayeth the Lord" on getting shots. When
it comes to the medical profession, each Christian must make
up their own minds regarding what they will let doctors and
other medical professions do. This becomes a matter of
personal faith and therefore the ministry cannot codify all
the situations one could talk about. The Bible does seem
clear on a number of points.
1 Corinthians 6:20
For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in
your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.
Also the verse before it:
1 Corinthians 6:19
What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy
Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye
are not your own?
The verse "glory God in your body". This is something we
have to decide just how we are going to do. Clearly some
Christians have gotten certain shots. Others avoid any
contact with the medical profession. Some go to
chiropractors and several take various kinds of supplements
into their diet. No one should be judged on these matters.
At the same time, each of us need to be careful with our
conversation lest we be a stumbling block on our brother or
sister in the faith.
All we can do is study the word of God and go to God, the
Father in prayer regarding each situation we find ourselves
in. It takes great faith to put our complete health in the
hands of God. It takes faith to ask an elder to anoint us.
Plainly, the Bible talks about things being put into the
body such as Clean and Unclean meats (Leviticus 11 and
Deuteronomy 14).
Psalm 103 is about Healing and asking God to forgive our
sins and thus to heal all our diseases.
One thing we know about health is that it is holistic, that
is, incorporates many elements: mental, physical, and
emotional as well as spiritual. All these elements are
served by having a close relationship with and reliance upon
God, the Father with and through Jesus Christ. Through the
power of the Holy Spirit (including
the fruits of the Holy Spirit) we know peace and
joy and temperance.......all related to our health.
Repentance has a lot to do with health. So does prayer and
fasting and meditation.
Man's way is different. It is always looking for solutions
apart from God. It is always looking for the quick fix
regardless of our health behaviors. What ever we do
regarding the medical professions must be based on a strong
spiritual foundation to these elements we talked about in
the paragraph above.
