QUESTION:  What is Doctrine?

ANSWER:

First let us look at the definition of "Doctrine"

DOCTRINE

 A body of beliefs about God, man, Christ, the church, and other related concepts considered authoritative and thus worthy of acceptance by all members of the community of faith. ~from Nelson's Illustrated Bible Dictionary

Now some verses:

Mark 4:2

And he taught them many things by parables, and said unto them in his doctrine,

Mark 11:18

And the scribes and chief priests heard it, and sought how they might destroy him: for they feared him, because all the people was astonished at his doctrine.

Acts 2:42

And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of

bread, and in prayers.

1 Timothy 4:6

If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained.

1 Timothy 4:13

Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.

1 Timothy 5:17

Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine.

2 Timothy 4:3

3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;

Hebrews 6:1-3

1 Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,

2 Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.

3 And this will we do, if God permit.

Note:  This verse often referred to as the 6 basic doctrines scripture:

1. Repentance from dead works.

2. Faith toward God.

3. Baptism.

4. Laying on of hands.

5. Resurrection of the dead

6. Eternal judgment.

There is actually a 7th doctrine there...

7. Going unto perfection..............overcoming sin...........becoming like Christ.

KJV-- doctrine, learning, teaching.

THEREFORE:   From the Bible comes our doctrine.  The Bible is our doctrine and learning and teaching.

Our doctrinal statements, booklets, sermons and television programs are commentary and explanation of our doctrine, teachings and truth.
